Numbers Not Noise looks at health outcomes, NHS demand, vaccination, mortality and public-health trends using official data and enough context to stop a single statistic being turned into a political slogan. The aim is not to make the numbers say what we want; it is to show what they can and cannot tell us.
Why context matters
A headline figure can be accurate and still mislead when the denominator, time period, population change, inflation, reporting method or legal definition is missing. We therefore compare like with like and flag breaks in data series where they matter.
What to look for
Check whether a number is a total or a rate, whether it covers the whole UK or one nation, whether it refers to a stock or a flow, and whether the latest period is complete. Apparent contradictions often disappear once those definitions are clear.
The latest public health picture
The numbers do not support a simple story of either collapse or success. Office for Health Improvement and Disparities data show that life expectancy in England improved in 2025, reaching 80.0 years for males and 83.8 years for females. At the same time, healthy life expectancy remains much lower. For 2022 to 2024 it was 60.9 years for males and 61.3 years for females. That gap matters because living longer is not the same as living longer in good health.
The inequality inside those averages is even more important. In the most deprived areas, healthy life expectancy in 2022 to 2024 was 49.8 years for males and 48.2 years for females. In the least deprived areas it was 69.2 and 68.5 years. Political arguments about the NHS can become a contest of slogans, but a gap of roughly two decades in healthy life is not a slogan. It is evidence that where people live and the conditions in which they live still shape health profoundly.
What the NHS data can and cannot tell us
NHS England publishes separate statistics for elective treatment, diagnostics, cancer and emergency care. The latest elective referral to treatment data available when this page was updated cover June 2026, with July due later in September. We will not mix waiting list pathways, people, appointments and completed treatments as though they were interchangeable. A dramatic number without the definition behind it creates noise rather than understanding.

The official health data reject both easy catastrophe stories and easy claims that everything is fine. Life expectancy has improved, yet the gap in healthy life expectancy between the most and least deprived communities remains enormous. That is why Truth Vs Hate will push back when health pressure is reduced to a convenient scapegoat. If a politician or influencer claims one group is the reason the NHS is failing, the claim should survive contact with the actual data on deprivation, workforce, demand, waiting pathways and long-term health. Complex systems deserve more than a target to blame.
