Toilets have become another front in Britain’s culture war. But privacy, dignity and safety do not have to be mutually exclusive. The law and building rules already point toward practical design solutions. A door with a symbol on it has become one of the most emotionally charged objects in British politics. Arguments about toilets now carry much larger fears about women’s safety, trans people’s dignity, sex, gender, privacy and whether institutions can.
